Media Room Makeovers Add Comfort and Style
Where a media room used to only be found in a very wealthy home, today they are working their way into regular family homes. Actually, the media room is where the family room gets plugged in to the new technology. Your media room is a great place to spend time with friends and family, and it should be a comfortable and inviting space.
Clear the Clutter
One of the big differences between a media room that has been designed and one that has simply evolved is evidenced in the chaos caused by cords, wires and various and sundry electronic components. When the room simply evolves unplanned from a family room to a media room, the electronic components and wires are usually a mess; however, when a media room is well planned, all of the working parts of the media room are artfully hidden. A simple way to streamline the chaos is to simply house all of your electronic components in a media cabinet that has plenty of storage, ventilation and doors that close to hide all of the chaos. As technology improves, wireless systems for speakers and computers have helped to reduce electronic clutter. By containing or eliminating all of these electronic components, the room is not only more appealing but safer as well.
Light and Dark
Light in a media room is very important. You need to have enough light so that you can comfortably use the room when you are not watching a movie, but you need to keep glare to a minimum when you are viewing a movie. By fitting the windows with room darkening shades and a layer of heavy drapes, you can minimize natural light. Adding dimmer switches to your overhead lighting and keeping shiny surfaces to a minimum also help with excess light reflections. Also painting your walls and ceiling a darker, flat neutral helps keep light from reflecting off of the walls.
Audio Upgrades
Not only does light bounce off of hard, shiny surfaces, but so does sound. Heavy drapes on the windows not only minimize the light, but they also help absorb the sound. Carpets on the floors and acoustic fabric on the walls can help minimize sound in your media room. If you have a large room you may want to designate a theater corner, and only cover the walls in that area. By the same token, you can use your darker walls at that end of the room while using lighter colors in other parts of the room.
Floor Plans that Support Viewing
Since you are setting up a media room you have the luxury of making it all about the television. Plan your seating by placing couches and chairs the proper distance away from the screen for optimal viewing. If seating is too far away or too close, it detracts from the enjoyment of viewing. Your system will include recommendations for seating distance if you are unsure how to configure your viewing space. As a rule of thumb if you have a 52" screen you want your seating from 6.5 feet to 11 feet away for the best viewing experience. Seating should place viewers' eyes at about the middle of the screen for comfort.
Comfortable Seating
Once your are content with seating measurements then turn your attention to comfort. You need to have enough seating for friends and family to sit comfortably and enjoy the feature. For the most versatile plan you can set up your regular seating area to accommodate the number of viewers who normally use the room, and they you can have additional comfortable chairs on casters that can be easily moved to the area when extra guests are in attendance. By having seating that can be easily moved from one area to another, you can instantly reconfigure the room to suit your current activity. For example, if your family is playing cards or putting together a puzzle, you can all easily position your chairs around the table. Keep in mind that your media room is also a family room, as you are designing your seating spaces.
The more versatile the design is in your media room the more frequently your family will be able to enjoy the room together, and in no time it will be the happy hub of your home.
