By the early 18th century, designs like the ornate cast ormolu, with its long bent arms and many candles were well-liked among the growing merchant class and are actually some of the finest showcased antique chandeliers found tody. In addition, advances in glassmaking throughout this period allowed for the cheaper production of lead crystal. Into the 19th century and the dawn of the industrial age, gas became the standard source of illumination, leading to the hybrid ‘gasolier’ – a portmanteau of gas and chandelier. During this period many candle chandeliers were converted to gas, and by the 1890’s, after a particularly groundbreaking scientific discovery, chandeliers were produced that customary both gas and electricity.
As the distribution of electricity became wider and the supply more staunch, electric chandeliers became the norm.
